This cache is located in the Bulls Island Recreation Area (D & R Canal State Park) just off Route 29 north of Stockton. You can park in the main lot by the visitors center and picnic area. The cache is a large Lock & Lock container. The cache contains a log and some trade items. NOTE: The cache was relocated in January 2015, at the Park's request, to an area outside their Natural Area Restoration Project.
I had the idea for a Lord of the Rings based cache for some time, but never put it all together. Over the last year or so, other cachers put out a bunch of caches following this theme. This cache finally lets me use the LOTR items I collected and also fulfills a second purpose. In completing the Tour de Cache 2 - NJ DeLorme Challenge, I noticed that there was only one cache located on page 40 of the DeLorme New Jersey Atlas & Gazetteer. Since I had been planning a cache in this area for some time, I figured I would combine all my themes in one cache.
The cache initially contains the following: a paperback copy of The Hobbit for the First To Find; a “Ring of Power”; a LOTR Sting Sword keychain; a mini-biner; a furry stuffed animal toy (maybe related to a Hobbit??); and several other interesting items.
To get to the cache NO bushwacking is required. The trail to the cache passes through a designated Natural Area. Please stay on the trail all the way to the cache. You can follow the trail from the boat launch area or you can go down the trail that starts across from the Park's mailbox on the entrance road. Either way gets you there. This is a loop trail. Be sure to take a look at the old stone control spillway just south of the cache location.
