Bound from London to Hobart Town, Captain Thorne anchored for the night off Port Esperance on 6 June 1855, almost within sight of her destination. About midnight she was found to be on fire, forcing passengers and crew to abandon her before the flames reached her cargo which included about nine tons of gunpowder.
At C a.m. on the E th of June
the fire reached the gunpowder, and the ship blew up. Her upper-works were totally destroyed, a piece of mast weighing two-hundredweight coming down in the bush half a mile from the water, and the hull sank in nine fathoms of water. The schooner Annie picked up the passengers, many in their night attire only, and took them to Hobart, along with a crewman who had been arrested on suspicion of arson. Later the paddle steamer Mimosa picked up the rest of the crew and some salvage. Nothing appears to have been proved about the alleged arson. A diver employed to locate the wreck drowned in doing so, September 1858. Consequently, the wreck itself remained more or less undisturbed until 1929, when it was rediscovered by Marine Board diver Joseph Hodson.
As the wreck site is only a short distance from Dover, divers have visited the site occasionally with coins, pottery, glassware and other small items recovered over the widely scattered site. Other things may be found some distance away as well. You could try looking at
