Geocache Description:

We frequent this park to let our two Golden Retrievers run and play. We have noticed and talked about the fact that when we were childen, at any neighborhood park, you would always see kids playing baseball. We hardly ever see kids playing baseball at local parks today.

America’s Old Pastime -
Baseball began in the United States in the 18th century. By the 1860’s baseball clubs were being formed. Also at that time American newspapers began referring to baseball as the “National Pasttime”.

America’s New Pastime -
It seems that today our “National Pasttime” for kids at any neighborhood park is Soccer.

Until the 1980s, most high schools in the U.S. did not offer soccer at all, and youth soccer programs were extremely rare until the 1970s. American high schools have grown to the point where most offer soccer in their autumn sports seasons. Older generations of Americans living today grew up with virtually no exposure to the sport of soccer. Today, AYSO has more than 50,000 teams and more than 650,000 players.

This cache is to honor America’s Pastime of Old.
