~~~~ OUR GEOCACHING ‘ETHIC’~~~~
We do not and will not place caches that cause any environmental damage in the placing or finding. The most you will need to do to find one of our caches is at the level of lifting up a bit of leaf litter, peering under the fronds of a fern, putting a foot print on a couple of weeds. If you are doing anything more than this, you are looking in the wrong place - we happily confirm co-ordinates for puzzle caches if asked - or just plain ‘looking’ wrong!!! Eyes and cunning will serve you better than brute force and habitat destruction to find our hides.

We’ve been looking for a Pohutukawa that met certain requirements and I guess this is the one! Step up onto the bank above the tree for a view of the river and the Twelve Apostles from an angle you may not usually get. Watch a boat go by on the right day.

The natural distribution of pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is the northern half of the North Island – typically in coastal areas - and around the Rotorua lakes, however it grows well when cultivated in many other areas of New Zealand as the Greymouth specimens demonstrate. M. excelsa is closely related to the Northern and Southern Rata and more distantly related to other members of the Myrtaceae family such as bottle bushes, eucalyptus and jarrah that are common in Australia. Our New Zealand manuka & kanuka are also part of this family.

The Pohutukawa has also come to be known as the ‘New Zealand Christmas Tree’ as it often begins flowering just before Christmas.
