The Rietvlei Dam, within the Rietvlei Nature Reserve (3870ha), provides water for Pretoria and is well managed. Only sailing boats and canoes are allowed, not motorised vessels. Activities include game viewing, angling, camping, horse rides and guided hikes.
The dam is not visible from the R21 highway and this is an opportunity for travelers passing Pretoria to do a quick road side cache and have a look at the dam at the same time as the cache is not too far from the on/off-ramp. The cache location is outside of the Reserve. Whilst looking at the dam, also look behind you on the other side of the road as we often see a nosy buck there who likes to be photographed.
Some stealth is required as there are muggles living close by and the occasional passers-by.
