INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #593

"Bethel Friend Meeting house and Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the New Bethel Cemetery in Brown Township of Morgan County. The cemetery is located with the Bethel Friends Meeting church. There are two parts to the cemetery. The older inactive section is behind the church. Across the road from the church they have opened a newer section that is still active. This is one of a group of Friends churches around northern Morgan County and southern Hendricks County. Like most Friends cemeteries, there is a sparsity of veterans graves, or at least graves where military service is acknowledged. Cemetery records do show a burial for a James Russell who was a veteran of the Mexican American War, but I was unable to find his grave. If you discover it, please let me know the approximate area where you found it and I will update this listing. Recent storms have blown over a large tree, which is covering some of the older stones. It's possible he's under there somewhere.

Iraqi Freedom Veteran

ISQ listings usually focus on veterans of our country's older wars, but the grave that caught my attention here was that of Robert Cook. Mr. Cook was a member of the US Navy Reserves. He was a manager for Auto Zone who found himself called to active duty like many of our friends and family members. Mr. Cook completed 10 months service in Iraq and returned to Mooresville Indiana. Unfortunately, he was only to have a little over a year left. His rate of SK stands for storekeeper. It appears he was able to take his many years of business knowledge and experience with him into his role with the Navy. Godspeed Mr. Cook.

World War II veteran

One of a handful of World War II veterans buried at Bethal

Another WW II Veteran

Mr Patrum was a Technician 4th Class. This was roughly the equivalent of a Seargent who had special technical training.
