A traditional cache hidden at a beautiful deserted beach
Conway Flat is a short (5km) trip via a well sign-posted turnoff from State Highway 1 on the North side of the Conway River bridge.
The beach here is one of those special East Coast places, beautiful, wild and deserted.. Sometimes the beach is sandy and at other times it is a fascinating gemstone beach..
The clean blue sparkling sea and the soothing muted sound as the big waves run foaming up the beach make it a perfect tranquil walking spot. Here we have seen Pilot whales cruising just beyond the surf and seals playing in the waves.
Park near the “W” sign at S 42 38.589 E 173 27.073 (part of the Kaikoura Coastal walking track) and the cache location is about 800m South along the beach within sight of the Conway Flat “Petrified Forest” an interesting group of ancient (8,000 year old) tree stumps emerging from the sand and cliffs.
Cache is a 1 litre clear container containing log book and swaps.
Note that a short vertical scramble (less than 5 metres) is required to reach the cache.
