Geocache Description:

A sea shore cache,Tonfanau, Cardigan Bay, Snowdonia.

2K to the cache...most always available apart from times of heavy sea conditions.

Parking is at Tonfanau railway station..a request stop on the Cambrian Coast Railway
N52 36.820 W004 07.389 or OS grid SH562039.
Cross the railway line at the Station..pass by a ruined farmstead following the track, then out across open fields to access Tonfanau beach at Aber Dysynni.
It's possible to approach from Cae-du, we wouldn’t recommend this as the rocks are slippery to walk across and with the chance of getting cut off on an incoming tide.

There something for everyone at Tonfanau...beyond the rocky and pebbly foreshore there are acres of sandy pools to splash around in,and there’s beach-combing for Dad too!
A low spring tide is needed to view the petrified forest..a vast ancient woodland that once extended far out into the present day Cardigan Bay.

The Afon Dysynni is a great place to watch waterfowl, seabirds and waders...and if you’d never seen a Chough before.. they are here in the old Tonfanau quarry.

On the north end of beach is a Sea cave..quite unremarkable as caves go, but folklore has it that Ednyved ab Aaron who in the reign of Henry IV, hid Owain Glyndwr in the cave after his defeat by that monarch..the cave is marked on the OS map as Ogov Owain or ‘Owain's cave’.

During the Second World War Cardigan Bay was virtually free of any shipping so Tonfanau was ideally located for firing anti-aircraft shells at targets in and over the bay. It’s thought that as many as 10000 troops at any one time were here and at the various other nearby camps, training for the Normandy Landings.
