INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST #596
"Crown Center
Cemetery"
This quest will bring you to the Crown
Center Cemetery in Adams Township of Morgan County. The cemetery is
also known as the Mount Tabor Cemetery.
Thomas Mills - Civil War
Veteran
Thomas Mills was a member of Company B of the 97th Indiana
Volunteers. The 97th was organized in Terre Haute. They
participated in the siege of Vicksburg and also were present for
many battles in eastern Tennessee and Georgia, including the
battles of Reseca, Jonesboro and Kennesaw Mountain.
James Smith, Civil War Veteran and member
of Grand Army of the Republic
Smith was a member of company B of the 117th Indiana Volunteers.
The 117th was mustered for 6 months of duty and spent most of it in
garrison duty around the Cumberland Gap. They lost no men to
combat, but lost 95 to disease in 6 months of service.
A World War I
Veteran
There are not a lot of veterans in this cemetery, but I was able
to find this World War I veteran. The concept of a depot brigade
came about in 1917 due to the large number of draftees entering the
service. A depot brigade was formed for each National Guard and
Army division. A depot brigade's job was to process new inductees
and to handle basic training.
