Greeneville Dam is a local fishing area, also helps supply electricity for the city of Norwich. The trails are fairly open, but lots of hills.
Greeneville Dam helps generate electricity for the city of Norwich. The dam also includes a Fish lift, for various spawning species. You'll find plenty of areas to fish (and plenty of fishermen) along the banks.
The history of the area is hard to track down, but it may have been a dump site in the mid to late 1800's. Every spring, the run off takes up more top soil along the banks unearthing multitudes of old old bottles. Most are broken, but with a little diligence, you can walk away with a backpack full of whole ones in an afternoon. Digging for bottles is frowned upon. Please be careful of broken glass.
Parking is located at N 41° 32.090, W 072° 03.060
Continuing on to the Dam area located at 41° 32.334, W 072° 03.012
The main surface of the dam is wood with stone and concrete underneath. During the summer, it is possible to walk out on the dam when the water is low and not going over it. But during the Fall Rains/Spring Run off, the water flow on the dam is dangerous.
Walk by the Dam and on up the trail to the cache located at N 41° 32.547, W 072° 02.937. Across the river from this spot, you can see the remains of the entrance to the Greeneville Canal, long abandoned, much like the mills that line this river.
The cache is a plastic ammo box filled with plenty of swag and room for more. As an amateur rock hound, most of the swag is various crystals and tumbled stones. An old disposable camera is for taking a picture of the group or your GPS or even the scenery. Please limit one picture per visit. If the camera is filled, please leave me a note so I can replace it.
