Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The SQ in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project
to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial
gardens. This is a good distinction to put on this type of cache
and would like to see it used here in Michigan. Please be
respectful of the area, and observe their rules and posted hours,
Michigan law states that you are only permitted to visit cemeteries
dawn to dusk through out the state unless other hours are
posted.
This being a mystery puzzle type cache you will not find
a cache at the posted co ordinance. You will need to visit this
spot to gain the information that will find you a small lock-n-lock
container.
The cache is designed to give you a little background on the
beginnings of the city of Mt. Clemens. After seeing the name of
this cache it would not take any kind of guess of how the city came
by its name.
Christian Clemens was born in Horsham Township (what we know as
Philadelphia), Pennsylvania. His parents were Mennonite framers
that that had settled in Pennsylvania from Germany. Christian was
one of 13 children and as a young man he was an conscientious
objector during Revolutionary War.
In 1795, Clemens moves to Detroit to work in the leather business.
He first came to the area which is now Mt. Clemens along with a
surveying group lead by Lewis Cass in 1798. Two years later he
along with Oliver Wiswell purchased a distillery which came to be
the first building built here. The following year Clemens bought
lands all around the distillery in the amount of some 500 acres.
After being here 17 years he campaigned to have the village of Mt.
Clemens become the county seat. Then donated the land and some of
the materials used to build the first county court house.
Family life for Clemens began after building a log home on what is
now North Gratiot in 1802 and then marrying Elizabeth Talmadge
Allen. She was a widow with 2 children, a boy and a girl. Together
they had 4 more daughters. He was appointed as justice of the peace
in 1805. He also had many positions with the village and then the
county. He was a judge from 1818 to 1836 and county treasurer from
1818 to 1827.
With many changes to this part of Michigan during the time of
Christian Clemens he was a big part of that change here in Macomb
County. He was appointed as Lieutenant-Colonel of a militia in
1805. During the war of 1812 he was confined to a dungeon by the
British and returned home after the war. He was instrumental in the
development of the stage line from Detroit to Mt. Clemens.
So now that you have some historical information, do you think you
know it all? Well there is always more to see and learn so this
cache will take you to a bit more. The posted co-ords will take you
to a place where you will find 2 tablets of information. These
tablets hold the answers that you will need to find the cache
container. One tablet contains many dates on it. The other only has
one. We will be using these dates to put together the co-ords for
the final somewhere in Mt. Clemens.
Puzzle time!
Using the single date from the one tablet, subtract 100 from that
date. Then subtract the second date from the other tablet. Now take
that number and multiply it by 4. Your final number will be added
to the posted north co-ords to get the final on the north.
This time using the tablet with many dates Take the 4th date and
subtract the 3rd date from it. Now subtract 1 from that number.
With this final number subtract it from the posted co-ords to get
your final for the west co-ords.
Be sure to use an extra amount of stealth on the final of this
cache. The location is one of which will get muggled if stealth is
not applied in a big dose! Thank You!
