Willamette National Cemetery (for veterans)
A beautiful property, nice views, and a soulful place to visit and pay respects (especially considering there's a war on). For the famous and relevant poem that the title refers to, click on the image link below, above the logs.
Best driving access is from I-205 (Foster rd. or Johnson Creek blvd. exits) or 92nd ave, then east on Flavel st. which becomes Mt. Scott blvd. Entrance is EAST at 112th ave. (Not to be confused with Lincoln Memorial Cemetery across the street, on the WEST side of 112th ave.)
Gated, with open hours daily 7am-5pm.
(See web-link above, near ratings, for official website.)
The distances between each waypoint and the final hide is all walkable on a relaxed day with time and nice weather, but driving is recommended otherwise.
The cache itself is a rectangular candy tin about 6"x3"x3/4", in a ziplock bag, and is externally marked as a geocache. It contains a logsheet and a pen.
For first-to-find I deposited a (possibly)gold-plated woman's "choker"-style necklace, an unused kangaroo-shaped bookmark made from real kangaroo hide (got it in Australia), a blue dog-bone-shaped keychain-carabiner, and a YAG laser crystal. Please only take one item, and only if you leave an item. I say this because most of the cache's that I've placed, and initially stocked with several items, are now empty (but for the logsheet) upon re-check.
First go to the initial coordinates. Find a large bronze eagle plaque. What is the number on it? [checksum for all single digits added together is 13 - for example, if the number on the plaque were 2007, the checksum would be 9]
Go to waypoint 1. What year was the bell tower dedicated? How many white plastic tubes (for holding flags?) are banded against the back wall of the stage? [May 2008 update - subtract 2 from the flag-tube number.] What year was the Canadian poem written? Add these three numbers together. [checksum for sum of the three numbers is 23]
Go to waypoint 2. Find a low-relief sculpture of a chaplain giving last rites to a fallen soldier. How many stars surround the image? [checksum is 12]
Go to waypoint 3. Find the flag that says "Semper Paratus". What number is on the flag? [checksum is 17]
Now add the numbers together from the initial location and waypoint 1. [checksum is 27] Add this sum to the decimal minutes of the following dummy coordinate to get the true north coordinate of the final cache location.
N 45 22.015
Add the numbers together from waypoints 2 & 3. [checksum is 20] Add this sum to the decimal minutes of the following dummy coordinate to get the true west coordinate of the final cache location.
W 122 29.899
Good luck, and have fun!
