Geocache Description:

Famous Watering Hole

NarvaezJosé María Narváez — 1791. At the age of only 23, Narváez of Spain led the first European excursion into the central part of what is now called the Strait of Georgia. Three islands still bear the names he selected: Texada, Ballenas, and Lasqueti. Although not as well known as the three great explorers who arrived one year later (Vancouver, Galiano, and Valdés), Narváez has the distinction of being the first European to cruise along the Sunshine Coast, on July 10-12, 1791. He was also the first to set foot on solid ground after anchoring off Mission Point near the mouth of Chapman Creek (he named it Rio de la Aguada) so he could go ashore to replenish his fresh water barrels. The cache is located near this historic spot.

For more information on Narváez, read Gary Little's article. There's also a new (January 2009) historic sign for Narváez located at the south end of the Davis Bay seawall.
