Geocache Description:

Another in the war memorial series.

Aberlady lies at the mouth of the Peffer Burn. It was an active harbour as early as 1149, and was one of the few places where trading vessels could come close to the shore for loading and unloading. In 1633 this nautical role was formalised when an Act of Parliament designated it as the port for Haddington. In the 1700s there was a weaving industry and smuggling was not unknown. However the larger ships of the 1800s needed deeper water, and Aberlady's role as a port gradually diminished.

There is a great photo of Aberlady's WWII coastal defences on Jack Aubrey's cachepage Aberlady Anti-Tank Blocks.

Notice the very well preserved 'loupin-on-stane' on the pavement in front of the church. You can walk from here down the lane at the side of the churchyard to 'Forgotten East Lothian Castles: Kilspindie.
