The Black Stump Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

An easy drive-by in a wonderful holiday spot - and an attempt to repay locals for all of their wonderful caches?

Paringa is the last town of the SA Riverland area before the Victorian border and a wonderful summer holiday destination.
Over many years our family visited and admired The Black Stump, and associated tourist shop. The stump itself is an impressive part of a root system belonging to a very old river red gum tree - the tree is some 8 metres in diameter and estimated to be around 600 years. In past years, it was also the site of a local character, Frank Turton. Frank had many claims to fame - country music composer, performer, former local Remark Paringa councillor, chook lover, tourist shop-owner, wood carver and creator of and wood burn artwork. While the Black stump is still there to be admired, the tourist shop a has closed. Perhaps other visitors can tell more of Frank’s story?

PS Thank you to local cachers (Lizards with Latitude) for local monitoring
