The cache is placed behind the park & ride. Not at the state
rest area. You can almost drive to GZ.
The area is the location of the old McCullough Children's home.
This was the orphanage for Jefferson County. Approximately 2500
children went through the home between 1914 - 1958. In 1957
detailed plans were ready for a four lane relocation of Rt 7. The
relocation of the highway would eliminate 2 hazardous underpasses
and replace one narrow bridge. It also meant the orphanage would be
demolished. The plan called for a clover leaf type junction to be
built, however the clover leaf was never constructed. The survivors
of the home get together once a month at the current location of
the children's home. I have had the pleasure of attending one of
those meetings and hearing some of the stories from their past. I
have also been privileged to read over a book that is currently
being published about the home. The book tells of the history and
also include many photos and stories from the survivors of the
home. The book was written by Gordon Grafton and is titled "Lost
Children of The Ohio Valley" I have placed a copy from an old
postcard in the cache so you can see what the area looked like
before the 4 lane highway came through. Please leave it for others
to see.
