Geocache Description:


This is the remains of the castle built in the late 1500's by Sir John Seton. It was a tower house in a chain of towers located in this area, including Ballencrieff and Byres to the west, Kilduff tower to the north and Athelstaneford tower to the East, with Markle castle and Barnes castle on the Garleton ridge. The west wing is obscured by the modern cottages but may well be the site of the courtyard gatehouse with an outer bridge. For defensive reasons the castle would have been surrounded by a deep fortified ditch. In 1724 Garleton was sold to the Earl of Wemyss. The presence of the modern cottages on site highlights the common practice of Victorian builders to dismantle ancient buildings, using them as ready made quarries.

Park in the layby at the parking coordinates. Walk up the road a little way and enter the field by the gate. Climb the hill! I can't recommend this cache for children as the road can be very busy with cars hurtling around the corner and the cache is placed near some crags.
