Geocache Description:

This is the second Church Micro to be placed in the tiny village of West Grinstead. The young Leprechauns were baptised here and Granny Leprechaun visits whenever she is over from the Land of the Leprechauns. This probably makes it our local church!

Church The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation was the first Catholic Shrine to be established in England since the Reformation. A French émigré priest, Monsignor Jean-Marie Denis, commissioned the Shrine in 1876 in thanksgiving for the re-establishment of the Catholic faith in England.

The church complex includes a Priest's House that dates from the middle of the 16th century. It is reputably the oldest continuously occupied Catholic presbytery in England. It was used as a 'safe house' where priests and seminarians could hide, should militia or magistrates be in pursuit of them. Originally just a small cottage, consisting of one room on each of the ground and first floors, priests lived here disguised as local stockmen. Under the thatched roof there was a hayloft that also housed a tiny hidden chapel. Additionally, two other hides (Priest's Holes) were built into the massive chimneybreast that supports the centre of the cottage.

The grounds of the Shrine are the final resting place of a famous Catholic author; this spot (at the stated co-ordinates)provides the clue that will help you find the cache. Find the date that the author died and, using the date format AB/CD/EF, decode the co-ordinates:

N 50. 58.B(B+F)D
W000 19.(E-A)(E+F)(A+D)

I struggled to find a hiding place for this micro as there is no public footpath nearby and the main road is very busy. I hope that the chosen hiding place is considered acceptable but feedback would be appreciated. Anyone caching with young children should approach across the church grounds. The cache is hidden along the perimeter of the grounds so it is possible for you to go roadside to seek the cache while your kids stay safely on the grass.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
