In 1832, the Chickasaw Indians began their migration from their
historic homeland in northern Mississippi and western Tennessee to
their new homeland in Indian Territory. Chickasaw Nation was formed
when the Chickasaw Tribe purchased land in south central Indian
Territory from the Choctaw Nation, and adopted a constitution in
1856.
In 1858, a two-story brick courthouse was completed on this site.
It burned to the ground in 1890. In 1891, construction began on the
Victorian Gothic capitol, using granite that was quarried on
Pennington Creek.
In 1898, workers completed the beautiful Capitol building that
stands today. It served the Chickasaw Nation as the National
Capitol until Oklahoma statehood in November, 1907. The building
was then leased to and later purchased by the Johnston County
government.
In 1989, the Chickasaw Nation, under the leadership of Governor
Bill Anoatubby, purchased its historical capitol back from the
Johnston County government. Please take a few minutes while you are
here to walk around the building and read the monuments.
