Geocache Description:

A small metal box. Will be a challenge due the the multilevel area and parking can be difficult. Please do post a picture to show the lack of progress of this monumental structure.

The project is completely dead as of December 2010. Too bad. :(

Thanks to world 67 for the picture!

The Chicago Spire is a supertall skyscraper under construction in Chicago, Illinois. The skyscraper will become North America's tallest free-standing structure and the world's tallest all-residential building.

The building was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and is being developed by Garrett Kelleher of Shelbourne Development Group, Inc.

Santiago Calatrava

Santiago Calatrava is a world renown artist and architect with many buildings designed overseas. One of his most notable local works is the Milwaukee Art Museum in Milwaukee, WI.

The Chicago Spire is scheduled to be completed in 2011 with 150 floors. Height = 2,000 feet (609.6 m).

Inspired by natural forms, each floor of the tower projects seven arms from the central vertical axis - each having a concave edge. As the tower rises, each floor rotates approximately 2 degrees in plan while the length of the radial arms also diminish. The result is a graceful spiral not unlike shells of the natural world. In addition, the character of the building's spiraled shape allows for better dispersement of applied wind forces which is an obvious advantage for any tall structure.
