Geocache Description:

A high level look onto the Silvermine dam. There is a charge for entering the Silvermine reserve unless you have a Green Card.

Head off over the dam wall and up the road a path leads off to the right at S34 04.788 E18 23.943, this cuts off a long hoof up the road. A further fork to the right at S34 04.825 E18 23.757 leads up to the ridge and subsequently the cache. The other alternative is to leave the road at the top if you are approaching from the Noordhoek Peak side at S34 04.592 E18 23.201 which then also leads to the ridge and the cache. Built in the 1890s by the old Kalk Bay Municipality and originally Hansen’s Reservoir after the municipal engineer, it soon lost that name and is now just known as the Silvermine Dam it supplied water to Muizenberg and Kalk Bay until 1912. It now supplies water to the Westlake Golf Course at the foot of Ou Kaapseweg The dark ‘cola-tonic’ appearance of the water is due to the presence of organic matter (mostly tannins). The colouring has been leached from the roots and bark of vegetation growing in the catchment area. It is harmless, but is removed from the water in the purification process when necessary. All water from the mountains in the Cape are of this colour a noticeable exception is the little bath in the Kirstenbosch gardens, Colonel Bird’s bath which is clear due to being filtered though the sand and soils around the bath.
