Geocache Description:

The town in Elmore County, Alabama, giving its name to the Wetumpka impact crater took its unusual-sounding name from a term in the Creek native people's language: Awe-tum-cau, which roughly translates to "rumbling" (or "tumbling") water".

Surrounding the city you will find a large horshoe shaped ridge. This ridge was formed millions of years ago when a metior believed to be about 1,100 feet in diameter hit this area. The center point of the impact is located at N 32 31'42", W86 14'12". The rim is about 3-4 miles wide with its highest point, "Bald Knob" on the northwest rim, having an elevation of 586.6 feet

Geologists speculate that the shock waves, the damage, and other effects of the impact explosion radiated out from the strike several hundred miles. Debris may have been thrown as far away as the present Gulf of Mexico. Geologists also theorize that the strike area would have been under a shallow sea, perhaps 300 to 400 feet of water, that covered most of southern Alabama at the time of the impact.

To get credit for this cache, email me the following:

  • A photograph of part of the ridge from any location with you and/or your GPS in the picture. Do not tresspass in the process. The ridge can been seen all around the city so any location will do.
  • The elevation at the point where you took the photo. Were you inside of the impact site or on a crator?
