Geocache Description:

Ten thousand people pass within a quarter of a mile of this everyday. A slight slope with a reward at the end. A HERO

Historians Take Note

You are looking for a simple film canister. W/ Geo-note and a log book. Caverdoc inspired me to place this one.
Although I come from the "Other" side of the Mason Dixon this fellow did not. I am sure he fought with the same determination that the Southern soldier did. No matter what the cause South or North, West or East, They all were American soldiers and always have been and will be worthy of our respect forever. Thank you Mr. Shields. This singular location is very unique. I discovered it 20 years ago and wondered at the time how I could make this mans legacy live on. Geo-caching has made that possible. Please be respectful. Very high in Muggles especially at start and quiting time.
You may want remove the top and leave the canister in place.
Please make sure the lid is on tight as it could gather water if left cracked open.
I would like to thank a fellow geocacher Mr_Ewok for his contribution to my page. Please enjoy, reprinted with his permission! Enjoy.

Robert Shields (ROB'T SHIELDS on the tombstone) was a Private in Company H of the 11th Kansas Cavalry (inscribed on the stone) during the Civil War. He resided in Kaw, KS. According to the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kansas, Vol. 1. - 1861-1865, he joined on April 16, 1862, and was accidentally killed in Olathe, KS on February 29, 1864. I believe the headstone next to his is his child, Amaziah Shields, died April 11, 1857 at the age of 1 year, 3 months, son of R & M. Additionally, another headstone was read and recorded in 1939 for a Joseph Shields, who died on February 18, 1858 at the age of 4 months, 2 days, also son of R & M Shields. As of 1987, the headstone for Joseph Shields, as well as many others in Franklin Cemetery, could not be located.
