Geocache Description:

The mound at Griswold Conservation Area is a glacial kame which was left behind with the melting of the Illinois glacial episode 75,000 years ago.

Super_cacher Sun and I have visited often. Especially during a good snow. Sledding here is AWESOME! Get ready to stretch your legs and prepare for a quiz at the end of your adventure!

How Does Ice Make Land Formations?
A large part of the forward surface of a glacier is covered with a layer of sediment and rock debris it picks up as it moves south. Sediment is added by glacial ice in two ways.

1) Large quantities of sediment are picked up by abrasion and can be placed directly by the ice.

2) Flowing meltwater leaves glaciofluvial deposits. The material deposited by the ice is called till or moraine. All glacial deposits are known as glacial drift.

How Does Kame Form?
Glaciofluvial deposits are usually stratified and vary in size.

1) Outwash deposits are formed when sand is eroded, transported, and deposited by meltwater streams in front of the glacier.

2) Outwash plain develops when there are a great number of meltwater streams depositing material ahead of the glacier.

3) Kame develops when ice melts at the front of the glacier causing sediment rich water to flow into a crevasse or depression in the ice This produces a conical-shaped pile of sand and gravel. Many kames are often found on or at the edge of moraines.

Assessment Time!
To receive a passing grade for this assignment, please complete three tasks:
1. Email me the elevation at both the monument (N39 42.274 W089 08.268) and the top of the kame (N39 42.340 W089 08.196).
2. Email me the answer to this question: What forms when melting glacial ice causes sediments to flow into ice crevasses and collect into piles or mounds?
3. Post a picture of you with your gpsr at the top of the mound.
