Geocache Description:

Cache is located in an undeveloped area owned by the Town of Hilton Head Island near the “heel” of the island.

The ‘Gator Hole is meant to give you an idea of what the inland portions of Hilton Head Island were like before development.

There’s a large pond nearby that’s a good fishing hole with large bream and bass. (The "pond" is actually a "borrow pit" where dirt was removed to lower the water table and build up the surrounding area for development. Without the "borrow pit" walking in this area would require waders much of the year.) It also has a resident population of 10 or 15 alligators. (About 20 years ago, a thief tried to run away from the law by swimming across the pond, but the ‘gators got him. True story. Ask anyone who's lived on the island since 1985.)

DO NOT attempt to feed or approach the ‘gators! SC Law prohibits feeding or molesting alligators. Not only that, they may still have fond memories of the thief, especially the bigger ones.

The original ‘Gator Hole, GCGTJT, was closer to the place where the ‘gators got the thief, but there was too much trash in the area and occasionally some sleazy muggles. I’ve made this incarnation a multi and upped the difficulty a bit.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT an easy “Park and Grab” cache. Bushwhacking is required and long pants and good shoes are highly recommended.

To find the cache, park at the library and stroll down the trail to the posted coords. There you’ll find an Island Events sign at the base of which is a testimonial to some local sports champions. (Checksum = 4000)

First championship year A B C D
Second championship year E F G H

Cache is at N32° 13.(F)(E+E+A)(E+E+E), W80° 42.(E+E+E)(A+E+H)(D-H)

If you don’t like math, project a waypoint 240’ from the sign at a bearing of 350°.

Either method should get you to a fairly clear area with a hollow tree and a large hollow stump about 35' from the water.

If you spot any ‘gators sunning themselves, please take a picture and post it with your log.

BTW, from what I can see, this is where the BIG bass hang out, so bring your rod and reel if you're so inclined.
