Geocache Description:

This can be a high muggle area especially in the summer.

In 1951 when I was 6 years old we moved from North Little Rock to a house located a block north of Markham and Van Buren. As I grew up in the area one of the most fascinating places that we would visit was the midway of Fair Park later changed to War Memorial Park. There was a skating rink where we used to go for skating parties while we were growing up, there was a miniature golf course where I played my first game of miniature golf, there were the typical games of chance where you tried to knock over the stuffed cats or milk bottles by hitting them with baseballs and there were all of these neat rides like the bumper cars, scrambler, merry go round, little boats that floated around in a circle or little cars that did the same thing only on dry land, a Ferris wheel , Rocco planes, a spook house home to the notorious “Laughing Lady” that terrorized little kids and my most favorite ride of all “The Flying Horses”. The midway is gone now, the rides sold off or removed and the buildings torn down to make room for new projects like the Jim Daily Fitness Center and additional parking for that facility as well as the Zoo. But thanks to the vision, dreams and hard work of a group of very dedicated people the “Flying Horses “are once more flying again in War Memorial Park. And these co ordinates will take you there. “Over The Jumps” the more common name by which this carousel is known was manufactured in 1924 by the Herschell-Spillman Engineering Company of North Tonawanda NY. It was built as a traveling Carousel to be taken from place to place and set up in towns and cities all over the US for Fairs, Carnivals or Fourth of July Celebrations. The carousel visited Little Rock regularly during the 1930 s when this area was home to the State Fair before they moved to their present location on East Roosevelt road. In 1942 “Over The Jumps “was purchased by Tom Fuzell and his wife and installed as a permanent fixture in Fair Park later called War Memorial Park. There were only 4 of these undulating track carousels built by the manufacturer and this is the only one known to still exist today. In 1991 when the midway was dismantled a group of saviors banded together to make sure that the carousel stayed in Arkansas. I use the broad term saviors because there are just too many people that took part in this statewide effort to not only purchase the carousel but to restore it and get it running again to even attempt to name them all and they did indeed save, for not only their generation but for generations to come a piece of history as well as an experience to be shared for years to come. A 16 year project has come to fruition and you are looking at the results. A more detailed account of the history and restoration of this magnificent piece of machinery can be found in the Zoo gift shop. You are looking for a small container a little bigger then a film canister.
