This cache has been archived.

The clowns fly @ 3..: Met with property manager of the Hardy House today. They feel that the cache is too close to the property for security purposes as the location is being turned into a museum. They thanked us for the interest in the building and appreciated all of the great comments of geocachers. This cache is now archived.

Geocache Description:

The Joseph Giraud House/ Hardy House

The Joseph Giraud House/Hardy House at 442 Flint Street, on the corner of Flint St. & California Ave, was designed by Frederick J. Delongchamps, Nevada's most famous architect. The house was built in 1914 for Joseph Giraud, a Northern Nevada sheepherder. In 1934, Roy Allen Hardy, a mining engineer who worked for George Wingfield, purchased the house.

This house reflects features of the Colonial Revival style of architecture, and the main features of the house are the porches projecting from three sides, the wooden staircase & the wooden bar. Today, much of the interior remains intact and in the upstairs men's bathroom there is a tiled mural of
a nude. The model for the mural reportedly posed for many Reno artists.

The Hardy House has been home to numerous restaurants featuring a varied fare of cuisines, including American food, Basque, & Italian. The restaurants include The Pyrenees, The Hardy House, and The Aero Club. The food was always excellent, but the restaurants only lasted a few years each.

The house is now home to a real estate office. Rumors have that the top floor of this mansion is haunted. The Giraud/Hardy House is listed on the City of Reno and the National Registers of Historic Places.

Thought not of particular historical significance, the two story brick building directly to the east of the cache location was once home to "Nevada's First Full Blown Coffee Shop." Deux Gros Nez (Two Big Noses (visit link) opened in 1985 and had a cult-like following and a very interesting display of bicycling memorabilia and antiques as well as a tiny elevator to bring food & drinks from the first to second floor without spilling them (the stairs were steep). The food was good, the coffee was good and the Frappes (pronounced like crap with an F) were excellent! The Deux Gros Nez closed November 30, 2006 much to the dismay of it's customers; so that Owner, Tim Healion could concentrate on his bicycle race, the Tour De Nez. (visit link) The Nez will be missed, as I spent many many hours there. (visit link)
