Geocache Description:

This cache is a semi-continuation of caches reflecting on my pride of our Potawatomi Nation and of it’s people, as well as my interest in visiting cemeteries with older history.

The cemetery was named for a Potawatomi leader who was known as Half Day. The nearby creek is also known as Half Day and he and his family are buried on private land within several miles.

The caretakers graciously allowed me to place a discreet cache and in return I hope you enjoy reading some of the tombstones and visiting the graves of the honored veterans. They take a special pride in the veterans buried there. A number of the veterans graves are documented, but unmarked and they are doing a project to place headstones on each of their graves as fund raising allows.

The container is a small plastic pelican. It’s initial contents are a wide variety of items including a Potawatomi Tribal Logo patch with a TB tag attached, a lot of small knick knacks and for the coin collectors, if you search thru the coins, there are several Cuban coins.

It is an puzzle cache found from clues at the waypoint. At the waypoint, there is a unique grouping of items at the base.

How many groups = “A”
How many in each group = “B”

For a final cache location of
N 39 09.56”B”
W 095 42.8 “A” 1

The walk between waypoint and cache is short and flat. To the east of the waypoint you will notice a grave surrounded be a picket fence. This grave is honoring an unknown soldier buried in the cemetery. Please be stealthy in replacing the cache as it’s hiding place requires a good cover.

Added 2/9/2010: Happened to be talking to an elder recently and she was just saying some names and one was Half Day. That was his nickname. His Potawatomi name was Abtegizhek. (her spelling)

Phoneticaly it would be pronounced Ahb-teg-i-shek

Happy caching!
