Geocache Description:

Fort Rutledge. If you ask where it is, most people would not have any idea. It is believed to have originally been located in the heart of Clemson University overlooking the Seneca River. The fort has long been gone but a monument was erected in 1908 by the Daughter’s of the American Revolution on the outer edge of campus. Fort Rutledge was built in the fall of 1776 as an outpost to defend against the Cherokee and Creek Indians. It was built to hold a garrison of 300 men. This was in response to a battle begun on July 1, 1776 by the Cherokees that killed hundreds of settlers. The fort was named after Governor John Rutledge.

This cache is located near the monument for Fort Rutledge. It is an ammo can hidden off the beaten path so some light bushwhacking may be necessary. The tree cover could decrease accuracy during certain times of the year. There is a trail that leads to monument and is a quarter mile walk. There is some elevation changes that could be difficult, especially at night or when wet. This cache will provide half of the coordinates for The Fort Rutledge Final Cache(GC18ZQF).
