Geocache Description:

This is the kind of spot where you can feel totally alone even though you are in a big city.

Dead Man's Gulch is the local name given to a cove between Maroubra Beach and Long Bay. Because it is a rocky cove that is difficult and dangerous to access, it remains a relatively isolated, infrequently visited part of Sydney’s coastline.

For these very reasons, local rock fishermen consider it a top rock fishing spot. The cache is located at the southern most point of the Gulch which gives lovely high views into the Gulch itself. North from the Gulch to Maroubra Beach are a number of other top rock fishing spots including 'The Blessings’ which is located at the north facing ledge of the point where the cache is situated. The Ozkateers have fished this ledge for many years and each time love to visit the other side of the point to view the beauty and isolation of the Gulch.

Getting to the Gulch can be dangerous and care must be taken. While there is no need for rock climbing equipment, getting to this cache may require a reasonable amount of fitness and agility. It is not suitable for geokiddies because of the risk of seas, climbing and high ledges involved. If the seas are high, leave it for another day.

There are two ways to access this cache. The first and easiest is via the track from the southern end of Maroubra Beach. It winds along the cliff tops to the point. Once there continue past the pillbox to find the way down onto the lower ledges which has been made easier by locals who have placed steel rods in the rocks to assist climbing down. The second and more challenging is directly along the rock ledges from south Maroubra Beach. This approach should only be taken at low tide with a small swell. If there are any doubts at any point along the way return to the Beach and take the track.

This cache is a log only cache and you will need to take a pen. N.B. Please leave it jamed there exactely as you find it.
