Geocache Description:

This traditional is placed near the town limit sign as you cross the Wateree River into Camden, SC, near a large parking lot. It is not located in the landscaped area around the sign itself.

Welcome to Camden, the oldest inland town in South Carolina. Founded in 1732 by order of King George III, who ordered that eleven townships be established inland along South Carolina Rivers, it was originally named Fredericksburg. Originally laid out just south of the present town, most settlers chose the higher ground to the north and the township was abandoned.

In 1758, an Englishman named Joseph Kershaw immigrated here and built a store in an area he called Pine Tree Hill (the second name for the town), and about ten years later the town was renamed Camden after Lord Camden, an advocate for colonial rights.

This cache is a medium-sized plastic tub that contains a few trade items, a log book and a pen. The tree cover is heavy and the ground is uneven in the search area.

Have fun and enjoy the visit!
