Geocache Description:

You're hunting an ammo can hidden along the Pine Ridge Nature Preserve and Trail at Historic Bok Sanctuary. This is a bonus cache placed by TTT that does NOT contain a stamp. Please visit the other nearby TTT cache to stamp your card.

Atop Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in peninsular Florida, this National Historic Landmark will open its grounds to Trek Ten Trails participants and all geocachers for a Bok Bonus Trek.

The Pine Ridge Nature Preserve and Trail is a Longleaf Pine-Turkey Oak habitat. Similar pine communities once covered millions of acres in the southeastern United States. Now in danger of disappearing, a small portion has been preserved in the Pine Ridge Nature Preserve. This habitat is an upland ecosystem typified by an overstory of Longleaf Pine and a dense groundcover of Perennial grasses. Visitors can experience this natural habitat on a 3/4-mile trail that begins at Window by the Pond and terminates at the parking lot. Many shaded benches along the way serve as places for relaxation and reflection. Along the trail you will see a bog garden, an open glade and a sandhill forest community that is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world

Historic Bok Sanctuary is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last admission at 5 p.m. Admission is Adults: $12, Children (ages 5-12): $3 and Children (under 5): Free. However, there is free admission to Trek Ten Trails participants who trek any four of the ten featured trails. Each person who presents their Validation Card with any four trail stamps will receive free admission to search for the cache and enjoy the world famous carillon and surrounding gardens.

This geocache is NOT part of the Trek Ten Trails 2014 program. Participation in that program, while a lot of fun, is not required to log this cache here. Trek Ten Trails 2014 program marks the seventh year of the Friends of the Parks Foundation’s call to explore the outdoors in Polk County. Fifteen nature trails and a bonus cache have been hidden at nature trail locations throughout Polk County this year. Each nature trail includes geocaches with a self-inking stamp for validating your visits to at least ten of the featured trails. To receive a completion certificate and be eligible for a other prizes you must find ten caches. Of course you may trek all fifteen trails and we hope you do!

New validation game cards, which participants stamp are available for download at the Friends of the Parks website and OUTPOST 27 CACHE. Trek Ten Trails 2014 program maps, game cards and other information about each of the featured nature trails may be downloaded from the Friends of the Parks website.
