Easy cache find with good access located near Holdsworth Lodge.
Holdsworth is the main entrance to the eastern side of the Tararua Forest Park. Set against the backdrop of some of the highest peaks in the Tararua Ranges it is a popular area for camping, picnicing, short bush walks and swimming in the nearby Atiwhakatu river. It is also one of the main entry points to the park for more challenging multi-day tramps and hunting.
Holdsworth lodge itself is available for overnight group bookings by contacting the resident ranger or the DOC Masterton office. During the day is is open for casual visitors and there is an intentions book in the foyer for use by trampers etc.
Holdsworth is reached by turning off SH2 into Norfolk road, 2km south of Masterton. This leads to Mt. Holdsworth Road. Holdsworth is 15km from SH2.
The cache is hidden close to Holdsworth Lodge and is an easy 5 minute walk from the carpark on a well formed level track.
When close to the cache, and after passing Holdsworth Lodge, look for a small path in the bush that leads off from the main track on the left, it rejoins the main track at the bridge. The cache is hidden at ground level and can be easily reached without leaving this path.
Stealth will be required, watch out for people on the main track, on the bridge, and possibly in a nearby camping spot. GPS reception will be less than optimal due to the nearby terrain, and forest canopy.
