Remembering…Crazy Horse Campground
Crazy Horse Campground was a real hopping place in the 1970’s. Besides having the usual camping experiences, there were many special weekends that happened each year. For Oktoberfest, there was German food, music, and Polka dancing, in the summer there was a full Luau, with appropriate food, music, and hula dancing, there were reenactment frontier robberies by the Over the Hill Gang, a local group, every holiday was celebrated by the staff and the campers. The Bi-centennial year (1976) was done up in style with special uniform/costumes for all of the staff. There were stables and riding trails. They held hay wagon rides during nice evenings. There was a man-made lake for swimming with a manual-pull raft that would take you across to the island in the middle, where you could play in the frontier log fort. There was the first water slide-ride that we had ever seen. The grounds, where the 100’s of camping sites were located, were covered with large oak trees, ducks, squirrels, deer and other wildlife. Many campers were regulars, some even stayed the entire summer.
Situated right in the center of things was a country-style general store. B worked in that store during 1976. E was best friends with the assistant manager and ‘hung-out’ most weekends. This is where E and B met, had their first kiss, and fell in <3LOVE<3. The wedding was in June, 1978 (held locally, in El Dorado Hills). This cache is placed to commemorate this location. The campground is now a subdivision of nice homes.
