Geocache Description:

Simple offset cache based on heading and distance from published co-ordinates. Small log only cache with room for small swaps and geocoins. Great views of Wellington Harbour, Somes Island, Wellington, Hutt and Porirua cities, and beyond.

The published co-ordinates will take you to the trig marker at 260m ASL atop Brandons Rock, the most prominent feature of a small unmarked reserve that also includes the Edgecombe St playground, and the area along the ridge to the south. A recently completed walkway heads south from Brandons Rock along the ridge and ends at Black Rock Road.

The name Brandon originates from the first European to own land in the area - Mr A de Bathe Brandon. As well as a prominent settler, Mr Brandon was the first Member of Parliament for the Wellington Country area and a solicitor.

Some older maps refer to the peak as Omega Trig in recognition of the survey trig. Brandons spelt without an apostrophe is the correct spelling as decreed by the WCC, odd then that the WCC sign in the playground incorrectly shows it with an apostrophe.

Park near the intersection of Edgecombe St and Chetwode Grove, make your way around the locked gate and up the steep driveway. Take the obvious path up to the trig. At the trig look for the 4 digit Geodetic Code number and use this to calculate the offset to the cache itself. If you are unable to project a way point on your GPSr then a compass and a bit of an eye for distance will suffice.

8214 - (number) = degrees true to cache
8244 - (number) = distance in metres to cache.

Cache is a short distance away and easy to access after returning back down the last short steep path to the trig marker. If you find yourself in the gorse you are going the wrong way! Suitable for children but they will need supervision at the trig marker. The terrain rating reflects the last 40m short steepish climb to the trig.
