Geocache Description:

Perhaps one of Windsor’s best known citizens of the 19th century was Thomas Chandler Haliburton. He was a judge, politician, and a well known writer. In fact his many stories that featured a fictional character who was a clockmaker, known as Sam Slick, made him the “Father of American Humor”. Sam Slick was known to have many wise sayings, and a good number of these are still used to this day. In order to locate this cache you must do some homework, and become familiar with the wise sayings of Sam Slick. You can refer to this web site: (visit link) for more information.

The seed coordinates listed above will bring you to the gate of Judge Haliburton’s 40 acre estate, known as “Clifton”. This property is now a museum and the house is open during the summer months (visit link) After hours and during the winter, the gate is locked, at which time you may have to park on the street outside the gated entrance to the estate.

To find the final cache location, you must start with the above seed coordinates, fill in the blanks for some famous Sam Slick sayings, and then do the math.

Sam Slick often said:

A - “___ of one, half a dozen of the other”

and

B - “A stitch in time saves ____”

For the north cache coordinates, subtract A from the seconds of the above seed north coordinates. For the west cache coordinates, multiply B X 21 and add the result to the seconds of the above seed west coordinates.

You can check your answer on Geochecker.com (visit link) .

The cache is a camoued peanut butter jar containing a log book, pencil, stash note, and a number of lapel pins. Please continue with the lapel pin theme when making your trades. There is a FTF prize of a Cache-aid Kit geocoin. Since Sam Slick was also known to say that “an ounce of prevention is as good as a pound of cure”, there is no doubt that he would have approved of a cache-aid kit!

Thank you to Alan Dauphinee, Haliburton House Museum Superintendent, for permission to hide this cache.
