Geocache Description:

This Cache is another in our historical series and focuses on the Heritage Drive.

On the 4th Feb 1862 the old Barnawartha Hotel was in the ownership of Watts & Reid.

Pamela Watts, wife of James Watts, was one of the owners. She died in 1862 aged 39 and was buried in a small cemetery which is on the property “old Barnawartha” Her death was registered at Indigo.

James Watts erected a headstone on his wife’s grave. This solitary headstone is the only evidence of the location of the cemetery.

James Watts owned property around Wodonga in the early days.

The hotel was a social point of the town where the workers from workshops, sawmill and brick Kilns would gather after work.

It would have been here that some of the sports meetings and horse racing meetings were organised as there were facilities for these sports in the area.

It is interesting to note that a dud cheque was passed here in 1862.
