Geocache Description:

Cougar Mound Scenic Overlook is just off HWY 287 in Bowie, Texas. This area is geologically quite interesting. An outcrop of Cretaceous sandstones (Cretaceous Trinity group) can be seen from the highway above a concrete retaining wall. The surrounding shales have eroded leaving the sandstone to support the ridge. The sandstones are also important to this area, because they are a catch for rainwater, which then flows downdip into subsurface sands, forming an aquifer.

The cache is a camouflage container and is hidden under a rock overhang. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be sure to completely conceal this cache in a way that it is not visible and will not look like an obvious pile of rocks. There are poisonous plants in the area, so watch where you step. You can best reach this location by following the trail, which begins here: N33°33.009 W97°51.381.

Because this is a public wooded area, there has been a lot of litter left behind. We would like to encourage other geocachers to help clean it up. There are trash barrels on the road to make this more convenient. Thanks for your efforts and HAPPY GEOCACHING!
