Isolated footpath between Dawlish and Starcross
Langdon Hospital was originally built in the 1930s to accommodate approximately 700 hundred adults and children with learning disabilities. Many changes have occurred since that time and many of the buildings of the past are now derelict.
The service now accommodates 70 beds. The most significant developments came in the early 1980s with the opening of a 30 bed Regional Secure Unit (the Butler Clinic) and, in 2005, the opening of a purpose built ten bed open rehabilitation unit (Chichester House).
One of the few residential mental hospitals remaining in the area, with Moorhaven, Exminster and Digby all being turned into housing developments.
Views to the sea over Dawlish Warren. Appears to be no parking on the main road so recommend parking at the Mamhead end. Please hide carefully and beware the spiky things.
