Geocache Description:

This is a nano cache and it is located at a very historic church in Annapolis, MD. The cache is very close to Duke of Glouchester St, so there is no need to disturb the grounds in any way.

Established in 1853, St. Mary’s is a gothic church in the Historic District of Annapolis. It was built on the property of a Revolutionary patriot, Charles Carroll, who cherished freedom of religion and nurtured it in his own community and beyond, to the nation. This 7,000 square foot church was built between 1858 and 1860 and was designed by architect Louis L. Long.

On the grounds of St. Mary’s is another historic building, the Charles Carroll House. Celebrating three generations and an urban cultural landscape that spans over 300 years, the Carroll House is a restoration-in-progress. This national historic landmark bears great historical significance to the state of Maryland and America as the home of Charles Carroll the Settler, first Attorney General of Maryland who settled here in 1706, his son, Charles Carroll of Annapolis, and his grandson, Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832).

Faced with both persecution and restrictions for his faith, Charles Carroll of Carrollton secured his family¹s vision of personal, political and religious freedoms for all citizens when he became the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Maryland is now the only state in America in which the homes of all of its signers of the Declaration of Independence still exist and all are located in Annapolis. The Carroll House is one of only fifteen surviving signers' birthplaces in the United States.
