Geocache Description:

In 1884, the Big Cypress School House, also referred to as the “Cypress School”, was built near this multi-school complex site where Lamkin Elementary now stands. The Big Cypress School House educated students in grades 1-8. In 1937, Rural HS # 5 was added to a 20 acre site to keep local students from having to travel great distances into Houston Reagan HS in Houston ISD. By 1939, students in the Fairbanks District (Hwy 290 & Fairbanks N Houston area)were attending Rural HS #5. These early consolidations became the historic mergers for the Cypress-Fairbanks Consolidated School District (CSD). Cypress-Fairbanks became an Independent School District in the 1960’s and had a student enrollment of about 3,525. Today CFISD is one of the fastest growing districts in the nation with 70+ campuses that serve more than 98,000 students. What started out as the one-room Big Cypress School House emerged into the provision of a secondary education for the surrounding community. Rural High School #5 became Cypress-Fairbanks High School, and in the years that followed 8 other High Schools have continued to meet the needs of this community.
