Geocache Description:

The cache is a small, clear, plastic box. It has a pencil, logbook and will hold small items. There are some items I placed for trade and also some pictures of the bridge for you to take if you did not bring a camera. Please do not leave the roadway or go under the bridge, there are steep embankments with fall hazards. Watch for vehicle traffic while searching. No climbing necessary to find it. Best to enter from west end after letting your receiver settle down.

Early bridges were made of wood, especially where it was a plentiful resource. Wooden bridges tended to deteriorate rapidly from exposure to the elements, having a useful lifespan of only nine years. Covering them protected their structural members, thus extending their life to 80 years or more. Covered bridges were also constructed to be used by travelers during storms and inclement weather.

The site of this cache is the new “Captain Swift Bridge” built in 2006. This new covered bridge in Princeton, IL is one of two that cross Big Bureau Creek on the city’s outskirts. The other bridge is “The Red Covered Bridge” which was built in 1863 and is the states oldest covered bridge that is still open to public traffic.

There is public parking at the east end of the bridge. Please take care to replace the cache exactly as found.

Beware of muggles in this highly visited location.
