Geocache Description:


Garmondsway
DMV – Deserted Medieval Village.

The cache is located next to the field containing the earthwork remains of this medieval village. A group of rectangular enclosures are visible, which contain the buried remains of medieval houses. The best view of the site is a little further along the lane.

In the early 11th century the Anglo-Saxon king Cnut left this village to walk the seven miles barefoot to the shrine of St Cuthbert at Durham.

In the Boldon Book of 1183 Garmondsway was a prosperous little community, furnishing the Bishop of Durham with an annual rent of 16 hens, 10 eggs and 16 shillings and 8 pence. The village was given to a leper hospital in Sherburn to provide it with food and an income.

Please be aware that this site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the cache is not in the field of the remains, but over a stile on the edge of the field.

Parking can be found at a passing point very close to the cache (for a cache and dash) or at the end of the lane just off the A177. If you drive to the cache site, there is a turn point a little further down the lane.
