Geocache Description:

This cache will take you through some of the most scenic areas in NC. You will need a kayak, canoe, or boat. It's a 14 mile trip. You will need to be in good physical shape to complete it.

You'll need to find Part 1 (visit link) and part 2 (visit link) to get the coordinates to the final stage.

Lockwood Folly River drains a small watershed in south central Brunswick County, about 25 miles southwest of Wilmington. It begins on the southeastern edge of the Green Swamp and flows south through low land. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean through Lockwood Folly Inlet near Holden Beach. The Intracoastal Waterway crosses just above Lockwood Folly Inlet.

It's even more amazing then it sounds. If you are into bird watching, this is a must do trip. I saw numerous bald eagles, pelicans, loons and herons. I also saw a osprey, a woodpecker, and so many birds that I have no idea what they were. Near stage two on a previous trip I saw a 6 foot rat snake. Near the final stage I saw a pod of harbor porpoises, only 20 ft away from me. The wildlife on this river is simply amazing.

I think the easiest way to do this trip is to park one vehicle at the starting location (N 34° 00.677 W 078° 15.798) and one at the end (N 33° 55.047 W 078° 16.089). The starting location is a little hard to get into. It's hard to see from the road. If you are driving toward the river from Supply, look for a little road on your left just before you get to the bridge. Drive in very careful. I would suggest that you only drive a 4wd, or a high clearance truck to this location. The ending location is a parking lot, so any vehicle will do.

I saved the trip info on my GPS. It took me 6 hours and 25 minutes to complete. I did some exploring of the barrier islands so it can be done faster.

Moving time was 5 hours and 6 minutes.
Stopped time was 1 hour and 19 minutes.
Moving average speed 2.8 MPH.
Overall average speed was 2.1 MPH.

The best time to start the trip is just before high tide. That way you will have the current to help you most of the way.

This can be a very dangerous trip. Please take all precautions. Be careful of the wildlife, there are bears, alligators and venomous snakes here. Although they will try to avoid you, they can become dangerous if you surprise them. Please check the conditions before starting the trip. The current can be extremely strong. Water conditions can change. I would avoid this trip during extreme temperatures.
