Geocache Description:

NY Capital Region Geocachers 6th Annual Picnic
September 20th and 21st
John Boyd Thacher State Park
(Voorheesville, NY)

Come join us for two fun filled days of games, camping and geocaching. You can come for a couple hours have some fun and meet a few new friends. Or, come for the weekend and have A LOT of fun and meet a whole bunch of new friends. Either way you will go away with some great memories and many new friendships. We have reserved the Pear orchard Pavilion for the entire weekend so this event will be held rain or shine.

John Boyd Thacher State Park is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. The park includes six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, and provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over twelve additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located approximately 2 miles from the park on Thompson's Lake (this is also where the camping for the event is located). The center opened in July 2001 and offers exhibits, interactive displays, trails for hiking and skiing, and educational programs.

Camping:

There is no camping at John Boyd Thacher Park. Camping for the event will be at nearby Thompson’s Lake State Park, approximately 3 miles away. The Park Manager has arranged for geocachers to camp in LOOP B for this event. Loop B is typically closed during this time of year, but he is opening this loop so that geocachers will be in one area.

Sorry, reservations CANNOT be made through Reserve America for Loop B.

If you are interested in camping at a specific site in Loop B you will need to see which sites are open.

Whippintegra set up a map of Loop B that shows where everyone is staying - check out the latest map Here

Then POST on the cache page which site you would like. The Map is updated weekly, so please choose three in order of preference just in case your first choice has been taken.

Then, click Here, to print out a registration card for the Park Office.
Complete the form and BRING IT WITH YOU the day you arrive. You will pay for camping at that time, directly to the Park Staff at the check-in gate.

The event is a Potluck Picnic, which means everyone attending brings something along to share. This year the NY Capital Region Geocachers will be supplying the hamburgers, hot dogs and buns. The Potluck Picnic will be for both Saturday and Sunday but breakfast and dinner are up to the individuals.

Please check the Food Contribution list link below, see what is needed and then post or email with what you'll be bringing to share - Thanks!!

Games

This year we will introduce a new game - the I Hate Micro's Toss. For this game, each team that signs up will be given a film canister when they register. Later in the day there will be a "Micro Toss" - which ever team gets their micro the furthest wins the handpainted 50 Cal Ammo donated by MSTZIlla. During the day you can 'prepare' the film canister to help make it fly the distance. Rules will be handed out when you sign up. There will be a second toss (and a second prize) for those cachers who are 12 and under.
