Where Woolly Walked Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

twhrider: Stopped by today and found my little friend slightly frozen into place. Kind of an appropriate end for this little mammoth. He is not seeing the traffic he used to, so I am archiving. I am still really thrilled that George Moon who found the mammoth in Lake Pleasant was able to visit my cache.

This cache is placed to feature nearby Lake Pleasant. Lake Pleasant is one of eight glacial lakes in Northwestern PA. It is a beautiful kettle lake, 64 acres in size and 40 feet in depth. Because the lake is alkaline it does not suffer the usual effects of acid rain and the result is a fabulous array of aquatic plants. Over 80 species exist here including the northern water-milfoil which is currently endangered.

This lake also holds a variety of fish. It is stocked with trout, in the spring, and has a healthy population of largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and blue gill. The black shin shiner and the Iowa darter, which are not found anywhere else in the region, can be found here.

The biggest catch at Lake Pleasant was in 1991 when George Moon, a local scuba diver, discovered the remains of a Woolly Mammoth. A nearly complete skeleton of a 15 year old male mammoth with nine and a half foot long tusks was recovered. WOW! That’s a find!

Feel free to bring a pole and enjoy this local treasure. If you decide to fish, please remember to follow all laws and regulations of the PFBC. No motor boats allowed. Cache contains a $5 Country Fair Cash Card for the FTF, and miscellaneous other goodies for other finders.

Placed with permission from the PA Fish & Boat Commission.
