Ophiolite Exposure Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ponder&Wander: Time to let this one go. The elements have worn away all good hiding spots, and the current remaining hiding spot is too easy to get muggled, and it has several times!

Geocache Description:

I can remember standing here, near GZ for this cache, with a geology class, not many years ago. At that time, a good part of Fidalgo Island, geologically speaking, was recognized as being part of an ophiolite. By definition, an ophiolite is a piece of oceanic plate that has been uplifted or emplaced onto the edge of the continental plate. The ophiolite here is a stratified igneous rock complex composed of an upper basalt member, a middle gabbro member, and a lower peridotite member.

What part of the ophiolite is exposed here? Notice the cracks in the rock formations. Could this just be the basalt member standing on edge? Or is there some gabbro here also?

The cache is a pill bottle camoed with black tape, placed in an unusual spot, which has not played a part in the development and exposure of the overall geologic formation. You only need to pull cache out of its hiding spot Please place cache back exactly as found, covered with beach gravel. This is a high muggle area. Beware of snoopy eyes.

It is not recommended to approach this cache during extreme weather conditions coupled with a high tide. Parking is available near the porta-potty. Bring your own pen.
