Drano Flume Company Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mayfly22: Seems like most all of our historic cache hiding spots are being used for firewood or some other equally destructive use. It was fun while it lasted.

Geocache Description:

Drano Flume

A nice drive through the country and then a short walk to see some of French Billy's work.

Shortly after the turn of the last century William Drano, aka French Billy, organized a company to build a flume over a lot of his homesteaded land. Lumber was king and they needed a way to get it to the mills.  The original flume ran from the Willard area to Drano Lake, a distance of about 4 1/2 miles. The Broughton Lumber Company bought him out in the 20's and extended the flume another 4 1/2 miles to the Broughton Mill.  Logs could be put in the flume up by Willard and arrive at Broughton Mill in under an hour.  The flume was in operation until 1986 when it closed down. Remnents of the flume can be seen above Highway 14.  People that lived along the flume never had to worry about running out of water for their gardens.  They just planted them close to the flume and collected the water that leaked out.  I even heard about a young girl with a pet goose.  She would walk it on it's leash to a pond by the flume and then let it swim around before she walked it back home again.
The cache site is located on Chenowith Road which is located off the Cook-Underwood Road close to the Willard turnoff.  Go down the road about 2 miles to where the road ends.  That is where the flume comes down through the woods and drops down into Drano Lake. The appears to be quite a bit of poison oak to the south where the flume goes over the hill so be careful if you are wandering arond.  The cache is hidden in an area where you don't have to get close to it.  The cache is a camoed PVC pipe with some goodies in it.  Enjoy a bit of history.
