Cache is in a rubbermaid container located in the proximity of the Plank Road B & O railroad stone arch viaduct on the public road easement. The site is easily accessible by all and a pull off is located nearby.
I learned the history of this stone structure from Ben, my father-in-law. He grew up in Rockbridge County not far from here, and he loves to tell the history of places like this. I want those who pass this spot to enjoy the story as much as I do, and I named this cache in his honor.
The story of this stone arch goes back to February 1866 when the Virginia General Assembly approved the charter of the V.R.R (Valley Railroad). The V.R.R set out to build a 113 mile track joining Harrisonburg to Salem along the Shenandoah Valley. The V.R.R changed hands many times, with Civil War General Robert E. Lee taking over the lead at one point until his death in October 1870.
The depression of 1873 and lack of local funding took its toll on the project, which was eventually abandoned. The only remnants that remain are the "viaducts, weathered embankments, stone arch bridges, and the bridge abutments" throughout Rockbridge County.
The cache was placed on February 10, 2008 and contains a dalmation toy, bookmark from Egypt, Euro coin, a piece of Virginia Coal, a cavalier momento, small flashlight, logbook and pencil.
Bring a pencil just in case, and dont forget to close the container tightly and return it to its hidden spot. Be discreet, may be muggles just around the bend!
Congratulations Team FairCorn FTF!
