Geocache Description:

Small, capped tube.

Chicago is an empire of architecture, and the Ceaser of modern Chicago architecture was Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Here is where he used to hold court. This cache is outside of Crown Hall, which houses Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture, where Mies van der Rohe was chairman from 1938-1958. The building, designed by Mies, has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

One of the things I like about the buildings Mies designed on campus is that he emphasized the structural elements, not only making them visible, but also making them the focus of the style. All of the buildings he designed on campus have their structural elements showing on the outside. While that made the buildings interesting, it also made them leak.

When I was a student on main campus in the 1980's, most of the buildings leaked like a sieve. That's all been fixed recently with the application of more modern materials, and everything seems to be holding up well now.

Here's a paragraph from the IIT website about Mies:

The Main Campus of Illinois Institute of Technology is an outstanding example of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), architect and educator and one of the 20th century's most influential architects. His design of the Main Campus and of other important buildings--such as the apartment towers at 860 and 880 North Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and the Seagram Building in New York--helped set a new aesthetic standard for modern architecture. In 1976, the American Institute of Architects designated the campus as one of the 200 most important works of architecture in the country. S.R. Crown Hall, which houses IIT's College of Architecture, was granted National Historic Landmark status in 2001. Other Mies buildings on the Main Campus include Perlstein Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall, Wishnick Hall, Seigel Hall, Robert F. Carr Memorial Chapel of St. Savior, The Commons and three IIT residence halls: Bailey Hall, Carman Hall and Cunningham Hall. In 2005, the entire academic campus of IIT was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
